New Poem: Speciation

Destroy the environment. Destroy society. Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe. Continue reading

What Does the Tracy Morgan Car Wreck Have To Do With Fracking? A Lot, Actually.

Some will accuse me of politicizing a tragedy, I am perfectly OK with that. When the facts are relevant you should not shy from offending the sensibilities of others, especially when those sensibilities are paper-thin to begin with. It seems a bit of a stretch, I know but hear me out, because what happened to the popular, former SNL star has a connection to very legitimate concerns about fracking. Continue reading

Getting Out Ahead of the Curve

The EPA was directed to set standards for radi...

Last night I had the privilege of sitting in on a Toxic Release Inventory, and my Right To Know (myRTK) training session in Grand Island. I would like to thank my friend, Melanie, and her Clean Air Coalition co-worker Rebecca, for holding that training. The information will be very helpful in the future. Too many people are unaware of just how ubiquitous dangerous chemicals are, and how much of a threat they pose. They know even less how to keep track of them. That is where this training came in. The radical, religious right often takes a beating here at HoA. Their unapologetic sexism, cis sexism, hetero sexism, and yes frequent racism need a good kick in the teeth. Dogmatic adherence to systems of oppression are supported by flimsy theology, shallow faith, and fatuous piety. The straight, white, cis male sees his privilege threatened and turns to an unknowable divine, a creature incapable of being challenged empirically and therefore, in their desperate minds, incapable of being toppled, making their selfish positions unassailable. That said, I want to make sure no one thinks that the radical right is alone in its dependence on invisible parent figures to prop up a limited view of the world. Continue reading

I know we have good, socially aware artists today. There is a small army of performers who stand up and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.  We have plenty of musicians and actors who use their art and their place in the public eye to advocate. Mos Def, Ani DiFranco, Bruce Springsteen, Russel Simmons (yeah technically not a performer) and so many others stand up and raise their voices to give hope to the hopeless. That said, boy could this country use another Woody Guthrie. Continue reading

Fracking Water Contamination

If you want to watch a movie that will make you want to punch someone in the face might I suggest Josh Fox’s Gasland Part 2. The only problem with it is it will leave you with so many targets and no idea where you want to start. There are some obvious targets. The executives in the oil and gas industry always deserve our ire. Certainly the mainstream media needs a fist in the pie-hole for creating a false equivalency between the arguments of environmentalists and the pro-fracking crowd. If anyone deserves a (strictly metaphorical for those of you in the NSA, FBI, or CIA who may be reading) slap across the face it’s those “liberal” politicians who have sold us out. Continue reading

Prisoners dilemma

Prisoners dilemma (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

At some point in your college career one of your professors, probably a philosophy instructor but perhaps a member of the international relations department, will introduce you to the prisoners dilemma. The idea being that two suspects, each separated from the other, are given the offer to testify against their fellow. If you are the lone person to speak up you get no punishment while the other gets a severe one. If both give testimony than they both get a punishment in the middle. If neither does, they both get a very minor sentence. In the end, each wishing to avoid prison all together throws the other under the bus and they both head off to jail. This is exactly what is going on with compulsory integration in New York. Continue reading
