New Poem: The Camp

2

Right now, as in, today, April 24, my hometown is trying to push homeless people out of a community they made, more or less out of anyone’s view, because, well, who knows why. I mean, sure, it is probably to keep development investors happy. And technically they are on private, though unusable to the owners, land. Personally I think too many in our society enjoy kicking people when they are down. Especially people who don’t count as people in the eyes of too many.

The Camp

We’d sweep you under the rug
but the rug is too good for you
we demand pristine
perfect
pretty
and most important
productive
around the clock and beyond

How dare you exist
in our dainty little world
with your growling belly
beaten
beggarly
and most of the time
bullied
because you are such an easy target

We’d go back to the old ways
if the world weren’t watching
our every move
mean
miserly
and as a rule
mendacious
what is truth when you own nothing

And we’ll sleep easy
believe we will
better than you can
capricious
cunning
and with a wide grin
cruel
because only those with matter
