Poetry Month Series Part 1

galazy

Sorry for the late start on this. I may or may not do extra over the next few days to catch up. I will be posting every day for the rest of the month however. Today’s poem is inspired by a conversation with a regular at Lift Bridge Book Shop and my favorite coffee shop about a book she is working on as well as a headline I saw regarding the search for extra terrestrial life. Maybe someone is out there. Maybe they are listening too, and maybe, just maybe, we sound like nonsense to them. Also, it is a Fibonacci poem, which I have not done in forever.

Who’s Listening?

Dust
in
the void
creating
echoes in signals
distorting communication
parabolic dishes overflowing with earwax

Who
knows
who is
on the line
trying to banter
with the hairless apes on our end
chattering away and listening across light years

Ones
and
zeroes
our language
but what about them
gazing at alien heavens
wondering how to extend a hand to distant friends

What
shaped
their minds
and their tongues
if they have tongues
if they even use sound at all
their poetry written in chemical difference

We
hear
only
the nonsense
scattered across stars
all whispering their sweet nothings
into our wondering and wandering antennae
