Why Identity Politics Matter

I often hear, usually from someone who is not struggling against the particular form of privilege being discussed, that “identity” politics are a distraction from the real economic struggles in this country. I am chastised that in focusing attention on LGBT issues, racial issues, or women’s issues, that I am taking time and energy away from the “real” problems of corporate malfeasance and the need for jobs. Never mind that I spend plenty of time writing about our economic issues in this country and that my paying gig, canvassing for Working Families, focuses very much on the need for jobs, identity politics still need to be addressed. Sex is a funny little world. Such a tiny word for such a big, complicated thing. Some of its complications are unnecessary. Our silly reactions to people experiencing sex in a way that goes beyond our boundaries  ties us up in knots and makes pariahs of those that like to be tied up in knots. No small part of our problems with sex, however, are intertwined with our notions of gender and power. The modern women’s movement is over forty years old. We’ve had twenty plus years of “no means no.” We’ve had a few years now of affirmative consent and “yes means yes.” We are coming up on the second anniversary of the first Slut Walk and still some attitudes don’t scrub out of our collective psyche. They are stains that refuse to be washed away and I am not sure they ever can be, though I will always fight to do so. Sometimes though, I get mighty tired trying. Continue reading
